Melissa Anderson caught up with the youngsters and shows us how they challenge themselves and face their fears. 27 regional JROTC programs came to Fort Benning to attend the annual cadet leadership challenge, a week-long camp that's teaching cadets how to face their fears and overcome challenges in life, giving them the opportunity to participate in activities that would teach them leadership. Leadership is the key to being a better citizen in JROTC. At one of the staples of the leadership challenge, cadets gear up and head to the top of the 34-foot tower where they have to take a leap of faith. The leadership challenge is getting these teens to try something new while building up their personal courage to build confidence. It's all about confidence building. A lot of these kids are scared; they don't go anywhere or do anything. This gives them an opportunity to overcome the fear of heights, which a lot of us have. For some, it was no big deal. You get to the top, you get hooked up, you jump down, and it's a big rush. But for others, it's not so easy. "I was nervous because I'm scared of heights, and it was challenging," added another event. The cadets climb even higher for their next challenge, bounding down a 64-foot rappel tower.
